Author Guidelines

For proposals

Authors are encouraged to submit proposals of up to 150 words that will receive an indicative recommendation from the issue editor/editor-in-chief. Following this preliminary feedback authors may then submit a full-length single-file manuscript for review (see our Section Policies). Note that full-text essays should be submitted on the same submission ID as the proposal (as an attachment to a discussion).

For essays

We welcome articles that

  • are well structured, have a convincing argument/form and follow academic convention;
  • are appropriately sourced;
  • adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style (footnotes and bibliography) and our In-house stylesheet;
  • are between 3,000 and 7,500 words;
  • are prepared for blind review.

Under the rubric of Creative criticism, we seek writers who are reflecting explicitly on their methods, practices, positionings, etc., as academic writers and/or creative practitioners. To submit your essay under this rubric please provide additional information as a Comment to the editors upon submission.

For commentaries and book reviews

We seek articles that

  • are written in clear, concise language (please follow our In-house stylesheet);
  • have the quality we associate with our mandate;
  • are up to 1,500 words in length.

For resubmissions

Please ensure before resubmission that

  • all recommendations have either been prescriptive for the present submission or have received substantial commentary at the end of the revised manuscript;
  • alterations in the resubmitted text have been properly highlighted to aid editors and/or reviewer(s) in their reconsideration.

Resubmissions should be submitted on the same submission ID as the initial submission, preferably as an attachment to a discussion. See the Guides for submissions for more details.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission is an original manuscript not submitted elsewhere. Authorship is based on substantial contribution, drafting and/or revising the manuscript for important intellectual content, and final approval. Any potential conflict of interest is declared during submission. The submission does not infringe on the rights of other parties. The author(s) have read and accepted all our policies.
  • All parts of the submission (text, illustrations, references, abstract and additional material) are submitted in one single file (MS Word or OpenOffice Writer file format). References are provided in footnotes and included in a bibliography with DOI links (when available), and the submission adheres to this journal’s stylesheet.
  • Author(s) agree to cover the Article Processing Charge (APC) before publication. APCs apply to articles published in vol. 6, no. 1, onwards.
  • The author(s) are not identifiable in the submitted manuscript, i.e., their names are removed from the document and the document properties.

Editorial

Editorials address the mandate of Inscriptions and the theme of the issue. They are generally 1,200 to 1,500 words, and do not have notes or references. Editorials are subject to open review by a fellow editor of Inscriptions.

Creative criticism

For our section Creative Criticism we solicit submissions under a broad ambit; we seek writers who are reflecting explicitly on their methods, practices, positionings, etc., as academic writers and/or creative practitioners. We provide space for autoethnographic explorations; lyrical, personal essays; creative non-fiction approaches; imagined dialogues; experimental oddities in which form charts “thinking in/as writing” (and vice versa); collaborative conversations and “inter-views”; interdisciplinary detournements; and even multimodal, hyperlinked, digital innovations. Generally submissions are 3,000 to 4,500 words. Creative Criticism are subject to open peer review.

Academic articles

Academic Articles are academic and scholarly essays that are well structured, have a convincing argument and form, follow academic convention, and are appropriately sourced. Generally submission are 3,000 to 7,500 words. Academic Articles are subject to double-blind peer review.

Comments and reviews

Commentaries and Book Reviews are written in clear, concise language. We are particularly interested in comments and reviews that explicitly address our mandate, theme, or debates initiated by Inscriptions or fellow journals. Commentaries and Book Reviews are generally 1,200 to 1,500 words and do not have notes or references. Commentaries and Book Reviews are subject to open peer review.

Authors who submit manuscripts and publish with Inscriptions retain copyright to their original work and agree to the following terms:

  • Inscriptions is granted the right to first publish the work under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License unless otherwise agreed in writing before publication;
  • Inscriptions and its publisher Tankebanen forlag are granted the right to produce and reproduce the work in any form, printed or electronically, for free distribution and sale;
  • Authors are permitted to post their work online and to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal’s published version of their work as long as its initial publication in Inscriptions is acknowledged.
